LUNDU: The Junior Chamber International (JCI) Malaysia Area Sarawak Family Day 2025 wrapped up a two-day eco-leadership and fellowship programme with a symbolic bamboo planting ceremony at the site of the upcoming Sematan Bamboo Resort and Campground.
The event, brought together over 100 participants, including CI Malaysia’s National executive vice president and Area Sarawak chairman Tan Chin Jie, as well as 14 chapter presidents from across the state.
The symbolic planting signified the start of transforming the Sematan site into an eco-tourism and bamboo education hub.
“The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), and aims to promote environmental awareness, green innovation, and youth-led sustainability projects,” JCI said in a statement issued by JCI Malaysia Area Sarawak.
The event on Jul 12 and 13 was led by organising chairlady Justine Yong and organised by JCI Batu Kawa.
According to Yong this symbolic planting is the first step toward turning this land into a space where people can learn, connect, and grow with nature.
“We hope the Sematan Bamboo Resort and Campground becomes a model for eco-tourism and bamboo appreciation in Sarawak,” she said.
Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan officiated at the event as guest of honour, marking the official launch of Sarawak’s first bamboo-focused education and eco-tourism initiative.
Also present were Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Kho Teck Wan and acting manager of Bamboo Resource and Carbon Trading at the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) Nizam Abdullah, who contributed to the collaborative effort.
