BAU: An elderly man’s early morning drive ended with his arrest after police found his Land Rover loaded with over 4,000 boxes of suspected illegal herbal and medicinal products worth more than RM300,000.
The 62-year-old was stopped by the General Operations Force (GOF) 11th Battalion in an operation dubbed ‘Op Taring Awas/Batas’ at around 7 am on July 11.
Sarawak GOF Brigade Commander SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang said the suspect is believed to be transporting a large quantity of herbal and medicinal products, which are allegedly unregistered and lacking approval from the Ministry of Health (MOH).
“Further checks revealed a total of 4,032 boxes containing various brands and types of health-related products stacked in the Land Rover. The vehicle used was also seized.
“The total haul is estimated to be worth RM305,161, based on current market value,” he said.
Both the suspect and the seized goods were handed over to Bau district police headquarters and Sarawak Health Department for further action.
The case is being investigated under Regulation 7(1)(A) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984; Section 37(1) of the Sarawak Minor Offences Ordinance 1958; the Sale of Drugs Act 1952; and the Road Transport Act 1987.
