KUCHING: This year’s Kuching Festival Food Fair promises more than just mouth-watering food; it will come alive with colour, rhythm and heritage from across the globe through the International Friendship Cities Night.
The free vibrant cultural showcase happening from Jul 25 to 27 will be held at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Theatre, and will run from 7.30 pm to 10 pm nightly.
It will feature a lineup of performances from China and Japan, celebrating international friendship and cultural exchange.
MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the event will see delegations from Tai’an from Shandong province, Zhenjiang (Jiangsu), Zhengzhou (Henan) and Quanzhou (Fujian) as well as Asuke, Toyota City from Japan.
“These delegations have accepted our invitation to Kuching, and they’re bringing with them performances that reflect their rich heritage and traditional artistry,” he told a press conference yesterday.
From China, he said, Taishan University students will deliver traditional singing, dance, music and martial arts acts, while Zhenjiang’s group will perform five classical Chinese dances.
“The Quanzhou delegation will showcase their renowned string puppet theatre. Meanwhile, Zhengzhou’s performers will present a crowd favourite — Shaolin Kung Fu, directly from the Shaolin Temple,” he said.
He added that Japan’s Asuke delegation will take to the stage with traditional Taiko drum performances, offering thunderous beats and dynamic rhythms that encapsulate the spirit of Japanese culture.
“This is the first time these cities are performing in Sarawak and even in Malaysia. So, we encourage everyone to come down, enjoy the food fair, and be mesmerised by these cultural performances,” he said.
Earlier, for the first time ever, global beverage brand Pepsi has come on board as a sponsor for the Kuching Festival Food Fair, contributing RM170,000 towards this year’s event.
