MIRI: A body of a newborn baby girl with her umbilical cord still attached was discovered in a drain at Lorong Aru 8, Kampung Luak, behind SM Sains Miri yesterday morning.

District police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said a report was lodged by an officer at the station at 9:50 am, following a call from a member of the public to the MERS 999 emergency line informing them about the discovery.

“Initial investigation revealed that the baby was found in the drain by workers from an engineering company, who were carrying out underground pipe installation works at the scene,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said the baby, who was found deceased, was full-term, fully formed, and had her umbilical cord already cut.

“The body has since been sent to the Forensic Department of Miri General Hospital for a post-mortem examination,” he said.

Farhan said the case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

He also urged the public not to speculate or spread sensitive content regarding the case on social media, as it could cause public concern and interfere with police investigations.

Anyone with information is also encouraged to contact Miri District Police Headquarters at 085-433400 or 085-433730 or Investigating Officer Nor Sharilazuwan Mohammad at 011-23321957.
