KUCHING: Sarawak schools have brought pride to Malaysia after emerging as the overall champion at the 2025 World Robot Olympiad (WRO) China Invitational Tournament.
The competition, held in Weifang City, Shandong Province from July 23 to 25, saw Sarawakian teams dominating various categories, with outstanding performances from Miri-based schools.
Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Chung Hua Miri secured first place in both the Senior High and Junior High categories, while Borneo International School claimed top spot in the Elementary category.
Another team from SMK Chung Hua also achieved third place in the Junior High category, further solidifying Sarawak’s dominance in the international robotics arena.
Gold Awards were also clinched by teams from Riam Road Secondary School (Senior High Category) and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Tukau (Elementary Category), while Borneo International School earned a Silver Award in the Elementary category.
In the Best Time Challenge, Borneo International School and SJKC Tukau took all top three spots, showcasing precision and speed in their robot designs.
The Sarawak delegation, trained by Tesslab Robotics, stood out among over 360 teams and more than 1,000 students from 10 countries, including China, the United States, South Korea, and Germany.
The tournament, themed ‘The Future of Robots’, was a platform for global youth to explore innovation, problem-solving, and teamwork through robotics.
The victory highlights Sarawak’s growing strength in robotics and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education, marking a milestone for the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development in nurturing young talent and advancing robotics education.
