KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak Government demonstrated its strong commitment to the welfare of Sarawakian students in higher education by allocating nearly RM50.4 million in Special Financial Aid (BKK), benefiting some 41,000 students.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the initiative reflects the state government’s deep concern for the future of Sarawak’s youth and its ongoing efforts to reduce poverty and strengthen the state’s economy.
“Today, I am fulfilling a promise I made. Sarawakian students are truly fortunate to receive this support from a caring government.
“That is why, no matter where our students are studying, including in Peninsular Malaysia, I do not want them to go hungry.

“I made a promise to provide aid which will be disbursed through Sarawak Pay (SPay), and can be used anywhere so our students no longer have to worry about food or basic needs.
“This assistance is given to everyone, regardless of social background,” he said during the launch of the Special Financial Aid for Sarawak Students in Institutions of Higher Learning in Malaysia in the capital today.
He added that another batch of applications involving 42,000 students is in the pipeline, with aid disbursed in phases at RM600 per semester.
This initiative, he noted, also eases the financial burden on parents.
“Parents, too, can breathe a little easier – they may still send pocket money, but won’t be burdened as much, since the state government is already providing RM600 through this scheme,” he said.
Beyond support for tertiary education, Abang Johari also highlighted the Sarawak Government’s focus on early childhood education where Sarawakian pre-schoolers enrolling this year will receive RM100 each to help parents with registration fees.
He said this ongoing support reflects the government’s “cradle-to-grave” approach, which symbolises its commitment to supporting citizens throughout all stages of life.
“We also prioritise healthcare and continue to deliver various forms of assistance. This shows that the government is not only compassionate but also clear in its objectives for the people’s future,” he added.
Abang Johari also shared that assistance like the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance Scheme (SKAS) is also being provided, which will be disbursed to the respective recipient’s SPay Global account.
“Through SPay, recipients can purchase daily essentials such as rice, sugar and salt, and other necessities at selected stores.
“Payments are made via SPay, and the funds come directly from government allocations,” he said.
