KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) has allocated over RM290,000 to support the growth of Muay Thai in Sarawak, with funding directed towards event organisation and the development of local clubs, Parliament was told on Monday.

Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Adam Adli Abd Halim, said the allocation included RM95,000 for Kelab Muaythai Rentap to organise the Rentap Fighting Championship VI held on Jul 11 and 12, and RM200,000 for the Sarawak Muaythai Association to stage the Premier Sarawak Cup.

“This is part of the government’s continuous efforts to widen youth participation in Muaythai and create more competitive opportunities for local athletes,” Adam said during the Dewan Rakyat session.

He was responding to a question from Roy Angau Gingkoi (Gabungan Parti Sarawak–Lubok Antu), who had asked about the ministry’s plans to bolster Muaythai events in Malaysia and increase youth involvement in the sport.

Adam further revealed that, as of June 2025, more than RM1.8 million has been channelled by KBS through the National Sports Council (MSN) in various forms of support for Muaythai clubs and associations across the country.

The breakdown includes RM1.585 million through the Sports Body Grant, RM247,000 from the National Sports Trust Fund (KWASN), RM55,000 from the Community Sports Fund, and RM170,000 to facilitate athlete participation in international competitions, such as the IFMA World Muay Thai Championship in Greece and the King’s Cup in Thailand. – TVS
