KUCHING: With teams hailing from across Malaysia and countries like South Korea and Australia, the Sarawak Ultimate Open (SUO) 2025 reflects the fast-growing appeal of frisbee in the region and Sarawak’s rising status in the sport.
The SUO 2025 returned with new energy this year, bringing together 12 teams for a weekend of exciting frisbee fever on Saturday (August 2) to Sunday (August 3).
The tournament welcomed players from Kuching, Bintulu, Miri, Sibu and Sabah – alongside international sides from Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, South Korea and Australia.
“We are proud to host such a diverse mix of local and international teams, showcasing the growing Ultimate community in this region.
“SUO 2025 has seen a clear step – it is bigger, better and more international than ever. We have welcome more than foreign teams this year, and the move to Kuching has made logistics smoother for most participants,” said Eric Ting Tiew Yui, President of the Sarawak Flying Disc Association to Sarawak Tribune.
The tournament features a mixed format, starting with round-robin pool play before progressing to knockout rounds.
He said this format ensures competitive balance while giving every team ample time on the field.
Compared to previous editions, SUO 2025 represents a significant leap in scale and logistics, which was held in Bintulu last year.
The event’s shift to Kuching has made travel and accommodation easier for most teams, a key consideration as the number of international participants continues to grow.
“Despite these hurdles, the organising team has worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
“As for recognition, trophies and medals will be awarded to the top teams, along with individual awards such as MVPs and Spirit of the Game – a key part of Ultimate culture that we’re proud to uphold,” he said.
