SIBU: Hosting the Sarawak International Volleyball Invitational Tournament (SIVI) 2025 here augurs well for the broader vision to promote sport tourism, bringing people together through sports, while also showcasing what the town has to offer to the world.
Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek stated that every visitor becomes an ambassador, sharing Sibu’s charm and stories when they return home.
“I would also like to commend the organisers for linking the tournament with the preparations for the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) next year, which reflects our long-term commitment to developing sports excellence and nurturing new talent,” he said at the tournament’s opening ceremony held at the Sibu Indoor Volleyball Stadium, Rejang Park here on Tuesday.
The tournament organised by Sarawak Volleyball Association (SAVA) in collaboration with Sibu Volleyball Association (SVA) is divided into men and women categories, and will run from Jul 29 to Aug 3.
For the men’s category, six teams are taking part, namely from Thailand, Hong Kong, Johor, Miri, Sarawak Senior and Sarawak Junior, whereas the women’s category involves seven teams, including Mongolia, Taipei, two teams from Thailand, as well as Johor, Sarawak Senior and Sarawak Junior.

Chieng noted that the tournament is more than just about competition for it symbolises friendship, cultural exchange, and the chance to learn from each other.
“Beyond the excitement on the court, l sincerely hope all our guests, athletes, and supporters will take some time to explore Sibu, a town known for its rich cultural diversity and warm hospitality.
“Sibu is often described as ‘Heartland of Sarawak ‘s Culture’ where can experience the unique blend of Chinese, Malay, Iban, and Melanau traditions.
“I warmly encourage everyone to discover our local cuisine, from the famous kampua mee and kompia to freshly prepared Sibu-style dian bian hu and our local tropical fruits.”
Beyond food, Chieng added that Sibu offers beautiful places such as the Sibu Central Market, the ironic Tua Pek Kong Temple, and the Rajang River, which is the longest river in Malaysia.
Among those present was SAVA chairman Datuk Moh Wung Ming, who is also SVA chairman.
