KUCHING: A rare and violent thunderstorm recently struck several areas in Batu Kawa, causing significant damage to homes in the Desa Wira area.
The storm resulted in blown-off roofs and fallen trees that blocked roads, creating major disruptions. However, thanks to the swift and coordinated response from various agencies, affected residents are gradually returning to their normal lives.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government and Batu Kawah assemblyman, expressed his sincere appreciation to all agencies involved in the relief efforts.
The team from Batu Kawah Service Centre, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai, political secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Kho Teck Wan, and local community leaders were among the first to visit the affected sites after the incident.
Together with community leaders, they assessed the situation on the ground and promptly coordinated with relevant authorities to carry out clean-up works, including the removal of fallen trees and other post-disaster efforts.” he said through a press statement on Friday.
Despite the storm’s severity, Dr Sim expressed relief that no casualties were reported.
“Climate change is becoming increasingly unpredictable. Prolonged heat waves can be suddenly interrupted by powerful storms with unusually intense rainfall and wind speeds, highlighting the increasing unpredictability of climate change,” he said.
He further reported that homes with damaged roofs have undergone basic repairs to ensure families can return to their homes safely.
Additionally, the MPP has deployed RORO bins in the Desa Wira area to assist residents with clearing debris from the aftermath.
“This incident demonstrated the resilience, unity, and mutual support within our community during times of crisis. It also showcased the efficiency of our local agencies in responding to natural disasters. Together, we are committed to rebuilding stronger and ensuring our communities remain safe and prepared for future challenges,” he said.
