KUCHING: Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) is hopeful that the state’s air quality would remain healthy in the coming days.
Deputy Premier and SDMC chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said most areas in the state recorded healthy to moderate air levels based on the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings as of Thursday.
“We hope the situation continues. And as for Kuching today, the situation looks good as well,” he said to reporters after officiating at the 37th Kuching City Day celebration at Pangkalan Sapi here on Friday.
He added that Thursday’s highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading was 73, which was still within the moderate category.
Uggah further said SDMC had met on Thursday for a meeting and issued directives to all Divisional Disaster Management Committees (DDMCs) chairpersons to mobilise their respective teams and deploy all available resources within the disaster committees to ensure thorough monitoring is carried out.
“If any fires are detected, swift and immediate action must be taken to prevent them from spreading further,” he said.
He said that the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) had revoked all open burning permits statewide two weeks ago, thus open burning is now strictly prohibited.
