KUCHING: The Sarawak government is calling city councils to contribute their roles in implementing the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the blueprint launched by the state government on May 29, has outlined 10 strategic thrust, 48 strategies and 111 actionable plans to drive Sarawak transition to a green and low-carbon economy transformation.
“Thus, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) can align their policies, urban planning and community programmes with the state’s development goals.
“The blueprint may also be integrated into Local Development Plans, Low-Carbon Initiatives in Urban Areas, Waste and Water Management Innovations, Community Education and Engagement, Nature-Based and Carbon Projects, Green Economy and Innovation, and Digital and Smart City.”
He said this in his text of speech read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the 37th Kuching City Day celebration at Pangkalan Sapi here, Friday (Aug 1).
On DBKU and MBKS played, Abang Johari said both play an important role in making Kuching a liveable and loveable city aligned with the theme for the Kuching City Day celebration.
“Local authorities, also known as local governments, play a vital role in managing and developing our communities.
“They are responsible for providing essential services such as waste collection, road maintenance, public parks, clean water supply, street lighting, and community safety. These services may seem small, but they directly affect our quality of life every single day.
“One of the key responsibilities of local authorities is ensuring the well-being of residents. They make decisions that are tailored to the needs of the local community because they are closer to the people and understand local issues better.”
Abang Johari also encouraged the people to participate in local council events, provide feedback and give support on the local authority agenda.
“By doing so, we help shape the future of our neighbourhoods. Local authorities are the backbone of a well-functioning community. Without them, our towns and cities would not run smoothly.
“Let us appreciate their efforts and work hand-in-hand with them to create a better living environment for everyone.”
