SELANGAU: The Sarawak Government is committed to strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as part of its strategy to develop a highly skilled workforce.
Minister in the Premier’s Department, Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai, said a reassessment examination for Year 6 pupils in Mathematics, Science and English will be introduced to evaluate their academic performance.
“This initiative is in line with the state government’s aspiration to assess students’ abilities and achievements at an early stage.
“Although UPSR and PMR have been abolished, we still need a method to gauge the effectiveness of our education system, especially in rural areas,” he said when officiating at SK Sungai Anak’s 2025 Annual Sports Championship on Thursday.
Sikie also called on parents, teachers and elected representatives to give their full support to the assessment initiative for the sake of Sarawak children’s future.
He stressed that enhancing STEM and TVET is crucial to meeting the demand for skilled manpower, particularly in industrial areas such as Bintulu.
At the same event, he announced an allocation of RM10,000 under the Rural Small Project (MRP) fund for the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) to support the school’s educational programmes and student development.
