KUCHING: The Kuching Festival Martial Arts Display has served not only as a platform to highlight various disciplines, but also as a symbol of Sarawak’s unity in diversity.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng expressed pride in how Sarawakians from all walks of life came together to celebrate martial arts as a shared heritage.

“You can see everyone gathered here, regardless of religion, belief, or martial arts style. This is what makes Sarawak truly unique,” he said in his speech when officiating at the ceremony on Friday (Aug 8).

Wee said martial arts exemplify the Sarawakian spirit of being resilient, inclusive, and united.

“No one in Sarawak should be left behind. Whatever the circumstances, we will always find a way to move forward together. This is how we envision our future.

“The performances tonight show that martial arts transcend age and physical limitations. Age is just a number,” he remarked.

Wee also reminded the public not to take Sarawak’s harmony for granted, emphasising the importance of nurturing young people and the arts.

“By supporting our children, our youth, and our cultural traditions, we are building a stronger, healthier, and more connected society. And that is the Sarawak way,” he said.

Meanwhile, festival organising chairman Othman Ujang said the event drew around 1,500 participants representing various martial arts, including Tai Chi, Wushu, Silat, Silambam, Judo, Taekwondo, and Kuntau.

“Every step and every movement tonight carries a message, that martial arts is a heritage we must take pride in, preserve, and pass on.

“Our goal is clear, that is to introduce martial arts to the people of Kuching so that it becomes part of our lifestyle and identity.

“For our youth, learning martial arts not only strengthens the body but also instils discipline, respect, confidence, and mental resilience. This is a defence against social ills, and a foundation for building a united and progressive society,” he said.
