KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth chief, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, indicated that he is considering contesting for a higher position in the party’s upcoming election, with the final decision to be made after consulting the grassroots.
“The decision must reflect members’ aspirations. There is no point going for a position without enough nominations,” he said to Sarawak Tribune after the PRS Supreme Council meeting at the PRS headquarters here today.
All PRS Supreme Council positions will be open for contest, except for appointed posts such as secretary-general, deputy secretary-general, treasurer, deputy treasurer, information chief, and deputy information chief.
Snowdan, who will not defend his Youth Chief post, said the move reflects the party’s commitment to democracy and maturity, allowing members including new and younger faces to step forward and serve.
“This gives an opportunity for those who want to offer their service in the party, including those with fresh ideas to strengthen PRS and move it forward.
“It is also what the grassroots want to see, some changes in the party and space for younger members to contribute,” he said.
On the possibility of a contest for the presidential post, Snowdan acknowledged that several Supreme Council members have shown interest.
“We respect anyone’s decision to contest. In an open contest, anyone can aim for any post as long as they meet the nomination requirements,” he said, adding that election line-ups remain fluid and could shift depending on delegate support.
He stressed that any contest will be carried out in a friendly and family-like spirit, with unity as the top priority.
“Even if there is competition, it is only among ourselves. Whatever happens, we remain one family, and unity is very important,” he said, expressing gratitude to PRS President, Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum, for the decision.
The party will issue official letters starting August 12 instructing divisions to hold their annual general meetings, with nominations expected to close by the end of September.
