MIRI: A dramatic late-night rescue operation unfolded deep in the interior of Miri after a four-wheel drive (4WD) plunged into a ravine along Jalan Long Loyang on Sunday (August 17) evening.
The incident, reported at 9:40 pm, involved a Toyota Land Cruiser carrying three people.
Two men sustained injuries and were evacuated to Klinik Kesihatan Long Lama for treatment, while a 24-year-old woman remained trapped inside the wreckage.
Emergency authorities faced significant challenges reaching the crash site.
The Fire and Rescue Department’s Lopeng station (BBP Lopeng) was alerted by the Sarawak Operations Centre (PGO) at 10:50 pm.
However, due to the remote terrain, the rescue convoy of seven firefighters only began its five-hour journey at 12:45 am, navigating through logging tracks in utility vehicles.
While en route, updates filtered through from Klinik Kesihatan Long Loyang, relaying information from villagers at the scene.
Local residents had managed to free the female passenger, identified as Samantha Urei Ngak Dominic Renang, and rushed her to Hospital Beluru in a private vehicle before the arrival of the rescue team. She was conscious but injured.
By the time the firefighters reached Pasar Lapok at 3:08 am, confirmation was received that no further rescue work was required.
The Lopeng team concluded the mission at 4:01 am and returned to base.
Authorities confirmed that all three victims survived the ordeal, thanks largely to the swift action of villagers and health workers on the ground.
