KUCHING: Sarawak’s Sylvia Alexander Lian has been appointed assistant coach of the national U18 women’s sevens squad for the Asia Rugby Emirates U18 Boys and Girls Sevens 2025 in Hohhot, China, from Sept 12 to 15.
The Kenyah-Kelabit coach, who hails from Long Jeeh, Ulu Baram and Batu Patung, Bario, described the appointment as both an honour and a responsibility.
Despite this being her third time with the national setup, Sylvia said she still feels nervous, but is ready to give her best.
“I am very honoured and hopefully with this good team of coaches and management, we will bring back medals for Malaysia. It is a big responsibility and honestly I’m a bit nervous even though this is my third time with the national team,” she told Sarawak Tribune when contacted today (Aug 18).
Her first stint was as head coach of the Malaysia U20 squad at the Asia Rugby Championship in Nepal, where the team secured a third-place finish. She later served as assistant coach at the U18 Asia Rugby Championship in Johor, guiding the side to another third placing.
For Sylvia, the new role is more than just a personal achievement, it is a call for more women to step forward into coaching and leadership roles within the sport.
“Hopefully with this appointment, other younger coaches will look forward to growing. Opportunity is there, just don’t stop. Now we are looking for more women coaches. Get involved, don’t give up even when there are obstacles. Go for courses to equip yourself with knowledge,” she added.
Proud to carry the Sarawak name onto the international stage, Sylvia also urged young women rugby players to dream big and believe in their abilities.
“As a woman rugger, always dream big. Never look down on your capabilities. Be strong, be courageous, be confident and stand firm to your beliefs. Most of all, have faith in God. Things will always go your way,” she said.
She also expressed gratitude to Malaysia Rugby and the National Rugby Development Programme (NRDP) for entrusting her with the opportunity.
