BAU: The construction of the Bau Sports Arena has reached 94 per cent completion and is expected to move into its second phase, which will feature a clubhouse with a recreational swimming pool for families.
Deputy Minister of Transport (Maritime and Riverine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said the RM9 million first phase of the project includes three futsal courts, six badminton courts that can also serve as a multipurpose hall, an open gym, and training areas for boxing and Muay Thai.
“For the second phase, we are planning a clubhouse equipped with facilities such as a lounge area, bar or canteen, and a restaurant to host family and community events, including birthdays and dinners.
“We will also build a recreational swimming pool similar to those at Sarawak Club or hotels, suitable for families to bring their children,” he said this when met by the media after visiting the Bau Sports Arena project site at Jalan Jambusan here today (Aug 19).
Henry added the arena was developed in Jambusan, an area that was previously quiet, to ensure that development benefits are not concentrated in one location.
“This is the balanced development concept we want, as our aim is to develop the entire Bau area,” he said.
He pointed out that the first phase of the project, set to become a new landmark in Bau, is a People’s Project initiative approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
As for the proposed second phase, Henry said it is still awaiting approval for additional funding under Projek Rakyat.
“We hope the Premier will allocate additional funds so that a conducive clubhouse for the people of Bau can be built.
“This project is not only for sports development but also as a community recreational centre,” he added.
Henry said that the arena will be managed by the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and is expected to create job opportunities for local residents.
