KUCHING: The Girl Guides Health Carnival 2025 drew a crowd of more than 800 to the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) grounds today.

The event was officiated by Deputy Minister for Youth, Sport and. Entrepreneur Development II (Entrepreneur Development), Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, who represented Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

In his speech, Awang Tengah commended the Sarawak branch of the Girl Guides Association for successfully hosting the carnival, which not only encouraged healthy living but also strengthened ties among members and the wider community.

“I truly appreciate the vision of the Girl Guides Association in organising such healthy activities.

“They keep members fit while fostering closer relationships within the community. This noble effort deserves recognition and support,” he said.

He also emphasised the importance of continued collaboration between non-governmental organisations (NGOs), government agencies, and the private sector in supporting community initiatives.

Meanwhile, the President of the Girl Guides Association of Malaysia (PPPM) Sarawak Branch, Datuk Dayang Morliah Awang Daud, said the carnival was also organised to raise funds to finance various association activities.

“The funds will be used to organise training programmes to enhance knowledge and skills, as well as camps.

“They will also be used to add office equipment, including laptops for members’ use, as well as other needs related to the management of the association in the state,” she said.

The day-long carnival featured a 3-kilometre Fun Run, Zumba sessions, a blood donation drive in collaboration with Serian Hospital and the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, and health screenings by the Kuching Division Health Office.

These included checks on body weight, height, blood pressure, sugar levels, and HPV testing; as well as cancer risk screenings, which were conducted by the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM).

There were also sales booths put up by the Kuching Autistic Association (KAA), Sarawak Society for the Intellectually Disabled (PERKATA), and the Sarawak Society for the Deaf, alongside food and beverage stalls run by Girl Guide districts from Kuching, Padawan, and Serian.
