PENANG: Sarawak remains committed to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to penetrate the global market through exhibitions, promotions and participation in international trade platforms.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the initiative is in line with the pivotal role of SMEs as a key driver of the national economy, contributing significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and creating employment opportunities.
“Let us not underestimate the potential of SMEs, as their contribution towards the country’s economic growth is very significant,” he said when officiating at the Sarawak Entrepreneurs Showcase (SUS) 2025 here on Thursday (Aug 28).
Awang Tengah, who is also International Trade, Industry and Investment Minister, highlighted the success of Malaysian products at the World Expo in Osaka, Japan, where roti canai was sold between RM50 and RM60 each, with an average of 2,500 pieces sold daily.

“This achievement proves that Malaysian products, including those from Sarawak, are capable of breaking into international markets if developed with quality and supported by the right marketing strategies,” he said.
He also noted that Penang, being an international investment and trade hub with a comprehensive logistics network, could further strengthen cooperation with Sarawak to open more opportunities in investment, business and tourism.
Also present were Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, MINTRED SME Advisor Datiuk Seri Naroden Majais, permanent secretary Dzulkornain Masron and InvestSarawak ehief executive officer Timothy Ong Wye Ern.
