KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his family took their first ride yesterday (Saturday, August 30) on the E-Penambang, the state’s first electric river ferry, offering a cleaner and greener way to cross the Sarawak River.

The E-Penambang, jointly introduced by Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB), combines modern innovation with heritage charm by retaining the traditional design of the perahu tambang while adopting eco-friendly, low-carbon technology.
Abang Johari also received a briefing from DBKU and SEB representatives on the operations of the E-Penambang, which currently involves nine electric ferries supported by a solar-powered charging station at the Pontoon Jetty in Kampung Sungai Bintangor.
The initiative also contributes to achieving the state’s Smart City goals under the Smart City Mobility component of its development strategy.
Also, present were Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy Bhd and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki, DBKU Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman, DBKU’s Director Ramzi Abdillah, DBKU’s Deputy Director of Infrastructure Services Department, Mohamad Faisal Adenan, and SEB officers.
