MIRI: Nineteen motorcycles were seized during a police operation targeting illegal street racing in Miri late Saturday night (Aug 30), as authorities stepped up enforcement on the eve of Malaysia’s National Day.
The six-hour operation, codenamed Ops Samseng Jalanan Ambang Merdeka, ran from 10 pm on Aug 30 until 4 am the next day.
Led by two senior officers and supported by five personnel from Miri police’s Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, checks were carried out at several hotspots including Jalan Marina, Jalan Miri Bypass and Jalan Tanjong Lobang.
Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the sweep was part of an ongoing effort to clamp down on reckless riders.
“The objective is to curb street gangster activities and ensure all road users comply with traffic laws and regulations,” he said.
During the operation, officers inspected 47 vehicles and detained 19 modified motorcycles under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further checks.
A total of 52 individuals were screened and 149 summonses were issued for various traffic offences.
Police have pledged to maintain regular enforcement against road offenders, particularly motorcyclists, and issued a stern reminder for riders to avoid dangerous behaviour.
“We urge motorcyclists to ride responsibly, avoid illegal modifications, and refrain from gathering on roadsides which can cause congestion and disturb public peace,” ACP Mohd Farhan said, adding that negligence could endanger not only riders themselves but also other road users.
The public has been urged to report any information on street racing activities to the Miri police operations room at 085-433400.
