BINTULU: Police have ruled out foul play in the case of a seven-year-old boy who drowned in a water reservoir near the Spait traffic light junction along Jalan Celestine Ujang last night (Aug 31).
Bintulu police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said they received a report from a father who had reported his son missing near the entrance to Taman Seri Pelabuhan around 8.30 pm.
Acting on the information, police, together with the mobile patrol unit and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), launched a search and rescue (SAR) operation in the area.
“The victim was found at the bottom of a five-metre-deep reservoir, about 50 metres from a workshop workers’ quarters.
“Preliminary checks revealed no signs of foul play on the body.
“Medical personnel from Bintulu Hospital confirmed the boy’s death at the scene before the remains were sent to the hospital’s Forensic Department for a post-mortem,” he said in a statement.
The case has been classified as sudden death.
Nixon reminded parents and guardians to remain vigilant and closely supervise their children, especially in areas near ponds or water reservoirs, to prevent similar tragedies.
