KUCHING: Inspired by the Paris-Roubaix format, the DBKU Road Race 3.0 will see 24 teams compete this Sunday (September 7), testing endurance and speed over 126 kilometres in a bid for category honours and RM15,650 in prizes.
The race, organised by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), will flag off at 7:00 am from Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument) before making its way through the city and concluding at DBKU headquarters, Bukit Siol.
The event builds on the momentum of the inaugural and second editions held in 2023 and 2024, which received overwhelming support from cyclists nationwide.
DBKU Deputy Director of Community Services Department, Rudzaimier Malek, said this year’s edition has reached the maximum quota of 24 teams, with an average of six riders per team.
“This year, the format is team-based. Most of the teams are local, from Kuching, Miri and Bintulu.
“We also have international participants from Indonesia and Brunei, and even a rider from South Africa who will compete as part of a Bintulu team,” he said during a press conference at DBKU Lobby, Bukit Siol, today.
Rudzaimier noted that the race format is inspired by the famous Paris-Roubaix in France, known for its gruelling and challenging routes, making it a true test of stamina and strategy.
He added that RM15,650 in prizes will be up for grabs, including RM3,000 for the Team Champion, RM1,500 for the Best Individual, RM300 each for the King of Mountain and King of Sprint, and a jersey and medal for the Best Young Rider.
“Insya-Allah, we hope this year’s race will run smoothly,” he added.
In total, around 130 cyclists representing 24 teams from Malaysia and abroad are expected to take part in the competition.
