KUCHING: The West Kalimantan and East Kalimantan provinces of Indonesia are not facing any issues in sending their contingents for the upcoming Borneo Games to be held in Sarawak at the end of September.
Sarawak’s Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said that the outcome of the final meeting with all six participating countries and states confirmed that no contingent had withdrawn at the last minute.
“In our final meeting, all provinces, countries and states involved, namely Sarawak, Brunei Darussalam, Labuan, Sabah and the two provinces in Kalimantan, will be participating in the Borneo Games,” he added.
“Up to this point, I have not been informed of any contingent not participating, and even in a recent Zoom meeting, all contingents confirmed their participation.”
He said this to reporters at the Baitulmalmur II Building today.
Meanwhile, he said that the request from two states in Peninsular Malaysia to join this event had to be declined, as this year’s Borneo Games is aimed at reviving the event, which has not been held for a long time.
“This is an event, a gathering, to strengthen ties between the provinces and countries or states involved on the island of Borneo.
“Two states in the peninsula requested to participate, but we informed them that this year’s Borneo Games is specifically to revive it after not being held for a while; so, this time it will only involve the states, countries, and provinces on the island of Borneo,” he said.
However, he stated that for future editions, the organisers might extend invitations to other countries or states interested in joining the event.
The Borneo Games 2025, which will take place over five days from September 24 to 28, will feature seven sports events.
These include badminton, football, athletics, archery, swimming, tug-of-war and blowpipe, apart from a special invitation golf event.
