OSAKA: The Sarawak Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing is exploring innovative solutions to strengthen community resilience and disaster preparedness through its participation at the Osaka Expo 2025, Japan.

Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, who led the delegation, said that the study visit reflected Sarawak’s commitment to protecting vulnerable groups, particularly women, children and the elderly, during emergencies.

A key highlight was the delegation’s visit to the ‘Shelter Lab: Designing for Disasters’, an exhibition that showcased sustainable and disaster-resilient shelter models.

The designs prioritised inclusivity and safety for at-risk groups during natural disasters and other emergencies.

The Sarawak delegation also took part in a ‘Rescue Training on Home Evacuation for Collapsed Houses’, which provided hands-on exposure to life-saving techniques, emphasising practical evacuation strategies during building collapses, and equipping participants with skills aligned to international best practices.

Fatimah said the insights gained will help strengthen Sarawak’s disaster management strategies under the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

“By adopting innovative solutions and international best practices, we can enhance our emergency response, improve community resilience, and ensure that vulnerable groups are better protected during disasters.

“These learnings will guide the development of policies and programmes that integrate global approaches with local needs, ensuring more effective and sustainable disaster preparedness in Sarawak,” she said.

The study visit reinforced the importance of household and community readiness, while also empowering Sarawak officials to promote safety awareness at the grassroots level.
