KUCHING: With the Borneo Games just two weeks away, the Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) has accelerated preparations, recalling players from Kuala Lumpur and Australia for an intensive training camp while setting its sights firmly on the team title.

SBA’s Honorary Secretary, Datuk Dr Wan Khalik Wan Muhammad, said the training camp was originally planned to begin on September 8, but was brought forward to August 27 on the directive of SBA’s President, Datuk Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar.

“Our players have been called back, including two who are competing in Kuala Lumpur and one based in Australia.

“We wanted everyone to start training together as early as possible to build team spirit and sharpen their form ahead of the Games,” he told reporters at SBA Hall today.

Sarawak will be represented by a 16-strong squad consisting of eight men and eight women.

Wan Lizozman said the players are undergoing daily sessions under the guidance of SBA coaches, with additional support from the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) to prepare the best possible lineup.

He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to challenge for honours.

“Our target is to win the team event. We believe Sarawak has the depth and quality to achieve that.

“Of course, the outcome will depend on how the players perform and the guidance of their coaches, but we are in a good position,” he said.
