MIRI:
Miri Central Prison has taken a bold step towards rehabilitation and reintegration with its “Corrective Outreach Programme: From Mistakes to Success – A Journey of Recovery”, held at the prison’s multipurpose hall on Thursday (Sept 11).

The initiative brought together 14 inmates and 30 of their family members in a setting designed to strengthen family bonds and foster community support.

The programme also featured collaboration with key government agencies, including the Ministry of Health (KKM), the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), and the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO).

These agencies delivered talks on mental and physical health, drug prevention, social protection, and employment opportunities after release.

Closing the event, Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (Entrepreneurship Development), Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, underscored the importance of giving inmates a genuine second chance.

“Those who are determined to change deserve our support. Society must embrace them as part of the recovery and reintegration effort,” he said, urging communities to extend acceptance and encouragement to former inmates.

The outreach served as a platform not only to connect inmates with their families but also to build strategic partnerships with external agencies.

Organisers believe such efforts are vital in boosting inmates’ confidence and preparing them for life beyond prison walls.

Miri Central Prison also acknowledged employers who have partnered under the Licensed Prisoner Release Programme (PBSL), offering job placements to inmates. These opportunities, prison officials said, allow inmates to apply their skills in real-world settings while easing their transition back into society.

With its strong focus on human connection and community collaboration, the Corrective Outreach Programme is expected to continue as a sustainable initiative supporting Malaysia Prisons Department’s mission to empower rehabilitation and promote holistic reintegration.
