KUCHING: The Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) expressed its deepest gratitude to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Johari Tun Openg, for officiating the union’s 60th Diamond Jubilee Celebration and announcing key initiatives to support educators across the state.
“We feel truly fortunate and moved by the Premier’s announcement that the state government will provide a parcel of land in Tanjung Embang currently being developed as an international airport area for the construction of our own STU building,” said STU’s President, Kullin Djayang, in a press statement today.
“It has long been our aspiration to have a facility that can serve as accommodation for students visiting Kuching for sports competitions or benchmarking visits, particularly those from rural and interior schools.
“The building will also feature seminar rooms and an assembly hall,” he said.
He added that the construction of the building will make it easier for teachers from outside the Kuching division to bring their students to the city while significantly reducing travel and lodging costs for school contingents.
“In addition, the Premier announced a RM60,000 allocation to STU for member development programmes and teacher-focused initiatives,” he said.
STU welcomed the contribution, noting that it reflects the state government’s strong commitment to education and the welfare of educators.
The statement of appreciation was released following an STU Executive Committee Meeting held at the union’s headquarters.
