KUCHING: Sarawak Energy has introduced a Net Energy Metering (NEM) subsidy scheme for domestic rooftop solar customers to encourage wider adoption of renewable energy in the state.

In a statement, the utility said the scheme provides financial assistance to households installing rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems under the NEM programme, making renewable energy more affordable for the public.

Sarawak Energy said the subsidy aims to support the state’s transition towards clean energy while helping customers reduce their electricity bills through self-generated solar power.

“To raise awareness of the NEM programme and the subsidy scheme, Sarawak Energy will participate in the Malaysian Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association (MPSEA) Solar Roadshow on Sept 22 at the Sheraton Hotel here.

“Members of the public can attend to learn more and explore how they can participate in the scheme,” it said.

Sarawak Energy explained that the subsidy will ease the upfront cost of rooftop solar installation and is available to Domestic Tariff customers on a first-come, first-served basis.

The amount varies according to installation size: RM12,000 for systems above 6 to 50kWac, RM10,000 for systems above 3.5 to 6kWac, and RM8,000 for systems ranging from 2 to 3.5kWac.

The statement asserted that each account owner is entitled to one installation only, and the scheme excludes households with pre-installed solar PV systems.

“The subsidy applies only to successful NEM installations from 2026 under the Domestic Tariff category for landed residential properties.

“Customers who sign NEM contracts in 2025 may submit claims through SESCO for consideration, with approved subsidies payable from January 2026,” the statement added.

Sarawak Energy stressed that all installations must be carried out by certified Solar PV Designers registered with the Electrical Inspectorate Unit (EIU) under the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication.

Applications must also be submitted through Sarawak Energy’s customer service counters on behalf of customers.

The NEM programme allows domestic customers to generate electricity for their own use and export excess energy to the grid.

The exported electricity is credited against monthly bills, lowering costs while supporting Sarawak’s renewable energy agenda and contributing to Malaysia’s carbon reduction efforts.

The initiative also complements the Sarawak government’s Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), which promotes renewable energy adoption and decarbonisation to drive sustainable growth.
