SEMATAN: The community in Kampung Temaga Dayak here can expect to earn more through eco-tourism as a new way to generate their income stream.

Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang said plans to develop a campsite and hiking trails to the village’s waterfall would provide a realistic way to strengthen the local economy, while ensuring the preservation of its natural environment.

He urged the community to prepare a proposal paper to seek funding for basic infrastructure to support the project.

“Eco-tourism of this kind will not only provide income but also ensure that the environment remains protected for future generations,” he said during the SMART Community Award 2025 assessment visit to the village recently.

Billy cited that the initiative showcased the community’s ingenuity in creating their own economic opportunities.

He also suggested planting canopy trees for shade, retaining the natural atmosphere of the campsite, and prioritising visitor safety by engaging tour guides for hiking activities.

Additionally, he is confident that with consistent effort, Kampung Temaga Dayak could achieve recognition in the SMART Community competition and become a catalyst for Opar’s local economy.
