MIRI: Narcotics police have arrested a foreign man for alleged involvement in drug distribution activities here, with methamphetamine worth more than RM6,000 seized on Monday (Sept 29).
Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the 27-year-old suspect was picked up at a shop around 12 pm in Jalan Bintang Jaya Utama.
“During the arrest, police seized three plastic packets containing 5.64g of methamphetamine, valued at RM620.40.
“Following that, the suspect led police to Lorong Jalan Sze Chuan 2, where they confiscated a plastic packet containing 51.40g of methamphetamine worth RM5,654.
“The drugs amounted to a total of RM6,274.40, an amount capable of supplying at least 285 drug users,” he said.
Mohd Farhan pointed out that the suspect had no prior records and he tested positive for methamphetamine.
The suspect is being remanded for seven days until Oct 7 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B and Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
If convicted under Section 39B, the offence carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, and up to 12 strokes of the cane.
Meanwhile, if found guilty under Section 39A(1), it provides for up to five years imprisonment and up to nine strokes of the cane.
He added that efforts are underway to trace the remaining syndicate members to ensure that they are completely dismantled.
