MARUDI: More than 500 residents of Long Bemang in Telang Usan were forced to move to higher floors of their homes after rising river levels inundated the village over the weekend.
The flooding, triggered by continuous rain and high tides since last Saturday evening, saw water levels reaching up to 1.8 feet in some areas.
According to Telang Usan’s Civil Defence Force (APM), floodwaters began to subside on Monday morning, with no casualties or injuries reported.
A team led by Private (PA) Nurshahrin Sapiee conducted monitoring and assessments at Kampung Long Bemang, SK Long Bemang, and the village chief’s residence.
The operation, which began at 8:10 am, confirmed that conditions were stabilising and that residents remained safe.
“Residents have temporarily relocated to upper floors as a safety measure. The situation is under control and water levels are receding,” said Lt (PA) Mirwan Shah Masri, Telang Usan District’s Civil Defence Officer.
A total of 548 villagers from 103 households were affected.
Despite the flooding, the local school and clinic continued to operate, and no temporary evacuation centre was opened as the flood trend showed signs of receding.
Long Bemang, a remote settlement along the Baram River, is among several inland communities in northern Sarawak that experience recurring floods during prolonged rainfall.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant as intermittent rain is expected in the coming days.
