LUBOK ANTU: The Iban community of Batang Ai, supported by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), has earned recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records for staging the longest non-stop Gendang Batang Ai performance.
Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros) Deputy Minister and SEB chairman Datuk Ibrahim Baki said the record achievement was a proud moment for the community.
“As part of our anniversary celebration, the Batang Ai community has set this Malaysia Book of Records achievement. Congratulations to everyone involved.

“In many ways, the Batang Ai 40th Anniversary symbolises four decades of collaborative partnerships between Sarawak Energy and the communities it serves.
“Your continued support and partnership are key and today we celebrate these achievements with our communities who have played a major role in our shared success in powering Sarawak,” he said.
He said this during the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant’s 40th anniversary, officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here today (Oct 6).
The record-setting performance was held on Oct 3 at Dewan Mengiling, Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant’s Operator Residence here, involving 129 participants across seven groups.
They performed continuously for eight hours, presenting traditional Iban gendang rhythms including Malut, Ngelaki, Bebendai, Gendang Indu, Tanggung, Tanjak Ai, Pelandok, Betal and Tawak.
The event showcased how the cultural traditions of the Iban community continue to thrive alongside modern development and renewable energy progress.
It was staged as part of Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant’s 40th anniversary celebration, ahead of Global Hydropower Day on Oct 11.
