BINTANGOR: The body of an unidentified man was found floating near the banks of Sungai Kawi here on Sunday (Oct 5) — with both hands missing and visible signs of decomposition.
Bintangor police chief DSP Tansli Mering said the grisly find was first made by a shrimp catcher who alerted nearby villagers from Rumah Dangat.
“Upon receiving the report at 1.10pm, a police team and villagers rushed to the scene using a local boat.
“The body was retrieved from the river and brought ashore with the help of villagers
“When found, the victim was clad only in blue jeans, and no identification documents were discovered on him,” he said in a statement.
The body has since been sent to Sarikei Hospital for post-mortem and DNA sampling to assist in identifying the victim should any relatives come forward.
Initial examinations found the body was missing both hands, while the right foot had injury marks and the face was swollen and already decomposing.
Tansli stated that the case has been classified as sudden death pending further investigation.
In light of this, he urged those with missing family members or relatives to lodge a report at Bintangor police station to assist with identification.
Members of the public are also reminded not to speculate as investigations are still ongoing.
