KUCHING: Thirty children from Green Eduland Kindergarten explored sustainable farming and nature-based learning during a visit to City Growers Kuching’s urban farm at Jalan Batu Lintang here recently.

The activity introduced the children to planting microgreens, observing food growth from seed to harvest, and engaging with farm animals in a safe setting.

City Growers Kuching founder Gabriel Hii said the collaboration with Green Eduland aimed to spark curiosity while fostering respect for food, life, and nature.

“Children are naturally curious, and what better classroom than nature itself? By letting them touch the soil, care for plants, and interact with animals, we help them build not only knowledge, but empathy and respect for life. After all, not all classrooms have four walls.”

He added that the session helped reduce dependence on gadgets, giving children the chance to observe, play, and imagine through real-world outdoor learning.

The programme also highlighted microgreens, tiny crops rich in vitamins and minerals, showing how small harvests could bring significant nutritional value.

“Understanding where our food comes from is essential. We hope to nurture awareness that aligns with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) values and sustainability.”

Green Eduland principal Grace Wong said the visit helped children appreciate food as a product of soil, sun, and care rather than supermarket shelves.

“Our teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in nature-based learning, fostering creativity, connection, and a sense of responsibility for the environment.

“Today’s experience helps them see that learning is alive and all around us.”

Both organisations asserted that the initiative supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly quality education and responsible consumption and production, while cultivating resilience in young learners.
