KUCHING: Sarawak will once again take centre stage in the Islamic world as it prepares to host the 14th World Zakat and Waqf Forum (WZWF) Annual Meeting and 2025 International Conference from October 13 to 15 at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) here.

The prestigious international event, which brings together leading zakat and waqf figures from across the globe, will be officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on October 13.

This year’s edition holds special significance as it coincides with the 70th anniversary celebration of the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS).

The event is jointly organised by MIS through Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) in collaboration with the World Zakat and Waqf Forum (WZWF).

Carrying the theme ‘New Global Zakat and Waqf Order: Innovative Solutions for Contemporary Challenges and Future Socioeconomic and Digital Development’, the forum aims to strengthen the role of zakat and waqf as key instruments in driving global socio-economic progress.

A total of 43 local and international speakers will share insights and research findings on topics such as Islamic finance, digital transformation, waqf governance, and community development.

More than 400 participants from Islamic financial institutions, government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and institutions of higher learning are expected to attend.

According to the organisers, the forum seeks to develop a more strategic, inclusive and sustainable framework for global zakat and waqf management, emphasising that waqf is not a temporary initiative but a continuing charitable practice that contributes to long-term economic empowerment.

In addition to the main conference, an exhibition area will feature booths from participating agencies, including Gobarakah, ASAS, Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak, PayHalal, Kedah State Zakat Board, Bernas, PPZ-MAIWP, Yayasan Infaq Angkasa, Cagamas, Selangor Zakat Board (LZS), JAWHAR, Pahang Gold, SAVO, Sarawak Tourism Board, TVS, INCEIF, MIB, Affin Islamic, MBSB Bank, Yayasan Waqaf Malaysia, Yayasan Kepimpinan Al Bait, and Tabung Haji.

Adding a local touch, Yayasan Kepimpinan Al Bait (YKAB) will showcase products made by asnaf zakat entrepreneurs, including layer cakes, food items, and handicrafts that reflect Sarawak’s creativity and community spirit.

The 2025 World Zakat and Waqf Forum is expected to become a catalyst for innovative ideas, inclusive growth, and transformative partnerships, further cementing Sarawak’s standing as a global leader in innovative zakat and waqf management.
