KUCHING: Ibraco Berhad is partnering with Singapore-based Health Management International Pte Ltd (HMI Medical) to develop a 300-bed specialist hospital at its NorthBank township in the city, expanding access to private healthcare in Sarawak.
The upcoming Regency Hospital Kuching, set to open in 2029, will be fully owned and operated by HMI Medical.
Ibraco said that the hospital aims to meet Sarawak’s rising demand for advanced healthcare and position Kuching as a regional medical hub.
Under the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), it said that Ibraco will sell its entire equity in NorthBank Specialist Hospital Sdn Bhd to Kuching Health Holdings Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of HMI Medical, for RM900,000.
The unit will then acquire 4.2 acres of leasehold land from Ibraco for the hospital’s construction.
Ibraco Group managing director Datuk Chew Chiaw Han said the project marks a key step in supporting Sarawak’s social and economic development through sustainable township growth.
“We are honoured to play a role in expanding Sarawak’s healthcare sector. The hospital represents more than just a new facility. It reflects our aspiration to create lasting community value,” he said.
He said NorthBank was designed as an integrated township combining homes, businesses, education, and lifestyle conveniences.
Chew added that the addition of a modern hospital would strengthen its appeal to residents and investors.
“Entrusting the development to a reputable group like HMI Medical is a natural step forward. Their proven expertise ensures the hospital’s successful delivery and enhances confidence among the community,” he said.
HMI Medical Group chief executive officer Chin Wei Jia said the collaboration reflects Sarawak’s growth and the increasing demand for quality healthcare.
“With Sarawak’s increasing international connectivity and growing demand for advanced healthcare services, we are excited to establish Regency Hospital Kuching within the NorthBank township,” she said.
She added that the hospital will feature smart systems, advanced technology, and internationally accredited clinical standards.
Once operational, she said that it will create over 1,000 jobs and offer cross-training opportunities for medical professionals.
Meanwhile, senior surgeon and Board director for HMI Medical’s hospitals in Malaysia, Dr Richard Chew, said as a Sarawakian, he was proud to help lead the hospital’s establishment.
“I look forward to the hospital opening new opportunities for economic growth and medical tourism, marking a new chapter for Sarawak,” he said.
The MoA exchange took place during the Sarawak Mega Fair 2025 in Singapore, witnessed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
