KUCHING: Pustaka Negeri Sarawak continues to play a pivotal role as a knowledge-based institution, serving not only as a repository of knowledge but also as a preserver of heritage and a catalyst for community learning.

This role was once again highlighted through the hosting of the 2024 Excellent Service Awards (APC) at a hotel here on Saturday night (Oct. 17), in recognition of 112 of its staff who demonstrated outstanding performance throughout the past year.

The event was held to appreciate the contributions and dedication of the state library’s workforce in strengthening organisational excellence as a lifelong learning leader in Sarawak.

Pustaka Negeri Sarawak’s Chief Executive Officer, Japri Bujang Masli, stated that the recognition reflects the organisation’s core values of integrity, discipline and teamwork.

“This award is not merely a token of recognition, but a gesture of gratitude to all staff who consistently demonstrate high commitment in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities.

“Service excellence must be accompanied by continuous innovation to ensure Pustaka remains relevant in facing the challenges of the digital era,” he said in his speech during the event.

He also shared the state library’s achievements throughout 2024, including the organisation of 1,751 reading promotion programmes that attracted 126,621 participants, while the total number of visitors to the library reached 115,189.

“These figures demonstrate that public interest in learning activities and access to knowledge remains strong.

“Pustaka is committed to continuing to provide a conducive environment for the development of a knowledgeable society,” he added.

At the event, two award categories were presented: the 2024 Excellent Service Award and the 2024 Pustaka Appreciation Award.

For the 2024 Excellent Service Award, 20 recipients were selected, comprising staff with Contribution-Based Positions (JBC) and contract staff.

They each received a Certificate of Excellent Service signed by the Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Amar Abu Bakar Marzuki, along with a cash prize of RM1,000.

Meanwhile, 92 other staff received the 2024 Pustaka Appreciation Award, which included a Pustaka Appreciation Certificate signed by the chairman of the Pustaka’s Board of Management and a Premium Savings Certificate from Bank Simpanan Nasional valued at RM500.

Also present at the event were chairman of the Pustaka’s Board of Management Datuk Abang Abdul Rauf Abang Zen, and Datuk William Patrik Nyigor, a board member.
