MUKAH: The implementation of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) and the distribution of Expansion Delivery and Support Service System (SPEKS) to the fishing community serve as key initiatives to improve the efficiency of sustainable marine resource management operations.

Deputy Minister of Economy and Mukah’s Member of Parliament, Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib, said the implementation of EAFM and the installation of artificial reefs in Sarawak waters are vital to ensure the sustainability of marine resources so that they can continue to be enjoyed by future generations.

“The implementation of EAFM and the installation of artificial reefs in Sarawak waters are crucial to guarantee the sustainability of marine resources, ensuring they can continue to benefit future generations,” she said during her speech at a related event here on Sunday.

Hanifah also urged the fishing community to take advantage of opportunities in the circular economy by adding value to marine products through processing and product innovation to generate new sources of income.

At the same event, she also witnessed the handover of SPeKS Expansion and myKomuniti Perikanan assistance to Mukah fishermen, which included equipment such as GPS devices and capital support aimed at improving safety and productivity at sea.

In addition, she officiated the groundbreaking event for the RM10-million Mukah Marine Fisheries Office Staff Quarters Construction Project, which is expected to be completed within 25 months.

Hanifah also attended the Fish Fry (Barramundi) Release programme at the Mukah River Estuary, LKIM Mukah Jetty, as part of efforts to enrich local fish stocks and preserve the river estuary ecosystem.
