For Chang Siaw Ling from the Ming De Chinese Cultural Education Centre, the annual ISKCON celebration has become a highlight of interfaith goodwill.

“We’ve been attending this event for about five years now, and every year it gets better.

“The decorations, the food, and especially the growing crowd; it’s so heartwarming to see people of all races and religions coming together.

“This truly reflects Sarawak’s peaceful and tolerant society,” she said to Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak.

Visitors also included international guests, such as Eric Brown from the United States, who said the celebration offered a valuable glimpse into Malaysia’s multicultural harmony.

“I honestly know very little about Deepavali.

“But Indian culture is so dynamic and deep, historically, it’s very interesting to me.

“I find it beautiful to see how different communities here come together to celebrate,” he said.

Brown also shared his admiration for Sarawak’s cultural inclusivity.

“I think Americans could learn from Sarawak. Here, people of different backgrounds celebrate each other’s festivals with genuine respect and joy. It’s beautiful and inspiring,” he said.

Meanwhile, Vimala Devi Nadeson Murugaiah, a teacher from Sibu now living in Kuching, brought her family to experience the celebration in a community setting for the first time.

“This year feels extra special. My mother has been unwell, but she felt strong enough to come today.

“It’s a blessing to celebrate Deepavali surrounded by people from all walks of life.”

She added that the festival has always been about fellowship.

“I love welcoming friends and students to my home during Deepavali, especially those who have never celebrated it before. It’s a chance to share our culture and values of kindness and peace.”
