KUCHING: The Sarawak government will review the allowances of local councillors within the next six months.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the review would also cover allowances for community leaders, including village chiefs (KMKK) and longhouse chiefs, to ensure their remuneration matches their responsibilities.
Abang Johari said the review was contingent upon the state’s stability, economic strength and revenue growth, which would allow such commitments to be considered.
“We are currently conducting a review, including for community chiefs, longhouse chiefs and councillors, provided our state is peaceful, prosperous and economically strong.
“If we work hard and the results are good, certainly the Sarawak government will consider this matter,” he said during the launch of Localisation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) For Sarawak Local Authorities today (Oct 21).
Abang Johari said that a special committee had recommended the review extend beyond allowances to cover welfare aspects, such as healthcare benefits at government clinics.
“For example, if they seek treatment at government clinics, the costs could be borne by the government. This is the holistic approach we are considering.
“If this step is implemented, I am confident that you will continue to contribute to the state’s development through new ideas and international standards. Insya-Allah, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian will inform you further,” he added.
On the same note, Abang Johari stressed that councillors play a vital role in ensuring state policies are effectively implemented on the ground.
“Being a councillor carries responsibilities, just like elected representatives. If there is even a small mistake, people will complain, including me.
“It is not only us in government who work hard, but also the community leaders. So if our capacity allows, our revenue increases and our economy grows, there is nothing wrong in sharing some of it with them,” he said.
