KUALA LUMPUR: A visit by residents of Tanjung Manis to the Malaysia Parliament has given them valuable insight into the workings of the country’s legislative institutions and the importance of transparent governance.
Led by Tanjung Manis MP Datuk Yusuf Abd Wahab, the delegation visited both the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat, where they were received by Dewan Negara President Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah.
During the session, Awang Bemee briefed the visitors on the role and appointment process of Senators as outlined under Article 45(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution.
He said the Senate plays a vital role in ensuring checks and balances on the executive and the Dewan Rakyat in accordance with the principle of separation of powers.
He also highlighted the recent approval of the Parliamentary Services Bill 2025, which restored Parliament’s institutional autonomy following the repeal of the Parliamentary Services Act 1963.
The move, he said, reinforces the independence and effectiveness of Parliament as the nation’s legislative body.
Awang Bemee said the Senate had established three Special Select Committees, namely the Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Committee, the Social and Community Affairs Committee, and the Law Review Committee to strengthen its oversight and legislative functions.
The visit, he added, provided an opportunity for participants from Tanjung Manis to gain a deeper appreciation of the parliamentary system, encouraging greater civic awareness and support for a democratic government grounded in the federal constitution.
