KUALA LUMPUR: Japan and Sarawak seek to deepen cooperation in green energy, sustainable technology, and human capital, to strengthen bilateral ties and drive a low-carbon economy in ASEAN.

Japan’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Shikata Noriyuki, paid a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in conjunction with the ‘Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak’ (LBAS) 2025 programme on Saturday.

Shikata said the discussion focused on expanding strategic cooperation under the leadership of Japan’s new Prime Minister, Takaichi Sanae, particularly in renewable energy, green transition, and student exchange.

He pointed out that Japan is strengthening engagement with Sarawak in green energy projects, especially hydrogen, while also exploring new investment opportunities that could benefit both parties.

“We are working together on various green transition projects including hydrogen and energy supply from Bintulu.

“Japan sees tremendous potential for investment in Sarawak through strong public-private partnerships,” he said.

He asserted that Abang Johari’s innovative policies in advancing green technology positioned Sarawak as an important partner for Japan in the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), a regional initiative towards carbon neutrality.

“Sarawak plays a vital role in the Asian zero-emission community given its expanding hydropower capacity.

“Japan is committed to continue supporting Sarawak in strengthening the efficient and sustainable use of green energy,” he added.

The courtesy call reflected the growing partnership between Japan and Sarawak across energy, technology, education, and strategic investment, reinforcing Sarawak’s role as a leading green economy in the region.
