Median household income in Bintulu the highest

BAU: Bintulu recorded the highest median household income in Sarawak at RM8,317, followed by Samarahan (RM6,785) and Kuching (RM6,741).

Sarawak Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) director Dayang Rozana Abang Hassan said the state’s average household income stood at RM6,947 in 2024, with an annual growth rate of 3.7 per cent.

She said Bintulu also topped the list for mean household income at RM10,480, ahead of Kuching (RM8,237), Miri (RM8,166) and Samarahan (RM7,965).

“Bintulu recorded the highest median household income at RM8,317, followed by Samarahan and Kuching. For mean household income, Bintulu again ranked first,” she said.

She was speaking to TVS during the HIES/BA 2024 Outreach Session with the community in conjunction with National and World Statistics Day 2025 here yesterday (Oct 25).

Dayang Rozana added that average monthly household consumption expenditure in Sarawak rose from RM3,915 in 2022 to RM4,281 in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.5 per cent.

The main categories contributing to household spending were Food and Beverages, followed by Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels, then Transport, and Restaurants and Accommodation Services.

Meanwhile, the state’s Poverty Line Income (PLI) for 2024 was recorded at RM2,718, up from RM2,618 in 2022, with food PLI averaging RM1,327.

Sarawak’s absolute poverty incidence was recorded at 8.4 per cent in 2024, compared with the national rate of 5.1 per cent.
