MIRI: The Orang Ulu community must continue to lean on unity as its core strategic strength to ensure its voice remains influential at state and national levels, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala said.

He emphasised that while the community represents only around six per cent of Sarawak’s population, its cohesion gives it presence and credibility in the wider social and political landscape.

“When we stand together and speak with one voice, we are heard. We are respected,” he said.

Addressing the Persatuan Golf Orang Ulu Malaysia (MOUGA) 2025 tournament dinner at Miri Golf Club, Gerawat described the event as more than a sporting occasion, positioning it as an important platform for strengthening collective identity and network capital across Orang Ulu groups nationwide.

“MOUGA connects us beyond politics, religion or place of origin. What matters is that we remain one Orang Ulu community,” he said.

He also praised MOUGA for nurturing youth talent in golf, saying young players not only carry sporting potential but also embody cultural pride and the future identity of the community.

Gerawat further reminded community organisations to maintain disciplined governance by holding annual general meetings and submitting complete reports to the Registrar of Societies.

He acknowledged MOUGA’s leadership, noting their voluntary service reflects genuine commitment.

“This is a ‘no salary organisation’. Yet the dedication is extraordinary,” he said.

Gerawat later presented RM50,000 to support next year’s MOUGA tournament, calling for greater support from Orang Ulu leaders to reinforce such initiatives.
