KUCHING: The Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) Dalat has been designated as the first training centre in Sarawak to offer the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Level 3 course in elderly and palliative care.

Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, said the introduction of the course marks a significant step in producing highly skilled professional caregivers capable of delivering quality services to the elderly and palliative patients.

“We would like to thank the Senate members who agreed to offer this course at CENTEXS Dalat, the only one in the state.

“This course is free, thanks to the Sarawak Government,” she said when officiating at the closing of the Sarawak International Conference on Ageing (SICA) 2025 here on Wednesday.

Fatimah also announced that the first intake of trainees will commence on November 29, reflecting the state government’s continuous effort to ensure the elderly care ecosystem in Sarawak is developed in a systematic, trained and competitive manner.

“Alhamdulillah, we have planned this, and by November 29, it will be a reality.

“On that date, we will receive the first batch that will be fully trained in elderly care and palliative care,” she added.

The Senior Caregiver Training Certificate will run for six months under the SKM Level 3 qualification, with an additional two-month palliative care module, making a total of eight months of training.

This initiative highlights the Sarawak Government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s human capital and preparing a skilled workforce to meet the growing demand in the senior care sector.

Also present during the closing event were State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, Deputy Minister Datuk Rosey Yunus, and other distinguished guests.
