KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Exhibition of Creativity, Innovation, Technology and Research in the Arts (eCITRA) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) bridges art and technology, uniting artists, academics and innovators under one platform.

UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit, said the development of traditional arts is now progressing in tandem with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).

He said this year’s edition, themed ‘Duality: Between the Physical and Virtual Worlds’, continues to reflect the evolution of the arts since its inception in 2005.

“Art in any form has the power to transcend language, culture and time.

“Through eCITRA, we not only celebrate artistic beauty but also foster dialogue that bridges tradition and technology between academia and the community,” he said when launching the exhibition at the Gallery, Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts (FACA), UNIMAS yesterday.

Ahmad Hata congratulated all academics, artists and students who contributed their works and expertise to the exhibition.

He expressed hope that eCITRA would continue to be held regularly as a leading platform to promote creativity, innovation and artistic collaboration nationwide.

He said visitors this year could experience art beyond what can be seen or touched – through technology and imagination – reflecting UNIMAS’ aspiration to bridge traditional and modern dimensions while promoting inclusivity and sustainability in the arts.

Since its introduction in 2005, eCITRA has served as a key platform for UNIMAS and FACA to showcase creativity, research and innovation in the arts.

Ahmad Hata also extended appreciation to Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) for its support as an industry partner and sponsor.

This year’s exhibition features more than 30 academic works by FACA lecturers, encompassing paintings, prints, sculptures, mixed media, installations and digital creations.

Among UNIMAS’ achievements showcased is the ‘SULAM Kampung Peros Project’ under the Catalyst for Change – Empowering Progress initiative.
