SIBU: Sibu Gym is celebrating over four decades of operations by doubling down on its founding mission: making fitness accessible to the wider public.

Established in 1983, Sibu Gym stands as one of the town’s pioneering fitness establishments, building a strong community-focused identity over the past 43 years.

Speaking at the gym’s Grand Open Day at its new Jalan Igan premises today (Sept 19), Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee noted that the facility’s relocation from the Sibu Civic Centre has not shifted its core mission.

“Nowadays we eat too much. It’s time to go to the gym,” Tiang remarked, emphasizing that regular exercise should be integrated into daily routines.

Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, highlighted that community-driven fitness aligns with public healthcare’s shift toward preventive care over treatment.

“We ourselves are the best doctor, and exercise is the best medicine to keep ourselves healthy and fit,” he said, adding that a nation’s strength is directly linked to the physical wellbeing of its people.

Tiang welcomed Sibu Gym’s initiatives to broaden outreach by offering tailored membership packages for youth, senior citizens, and local youth organizations.

“For the young, healthy habits should start from the very beginning. For the elderly, staying fit helps them maintain independence and avoid high medical costs,” Tiang added, pledging continued support for local fitness initiatives.

Organised by the Sibu Division Bodybuilding and Weightlifting Association (SDBWA), the event was also attended by SDBWA president Chia Soon Cheong.
