KUCHING: Age has not slowed Halim down as, at 41 years old, he carries not just his team’s hopes but a personal journey of resilience, dedication, and a love for the water that began long ago.
Halim is a veteran paddler from Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. With nearly seven years of experience, he has become a cornerstone of Landas’ longboat squad at the Sarawak Regatta 2025.
“I’ve been paddling for about six to seven years. Paddling is part of my life. It’s more than just a sport; it’s my passion,” Halim shared with Sarawak Tribune during an interview at the regatta riverbank.
A father of two, Halim balances his family life with his unwavering commitment to the team.
“I have two children, a boy and a girl. Despite the challenges of work and family, I make sure to train regularly. That’s the key,” he said.
His work varies – sometimes helping in his community, sometimes taking on other jobs, but his dedication to paddling remains steadfast.
Despite being the eldest paddler on Team Jetski, competing under the banner of Team Landas, Halim maintains his fitness through consistent training.
“It’s normal to feel tired with age, but with regular practice, I keep up. There’s no secret, just discipline and hard work,” he said.
He also dismissed rumours about special ‘ilmu’ or powers in the sport.
“People ask if we use any special skills, but no, it’s all training,” Halim explained.
Camaraderie and teamwork are what keep him motivated.
“We are like family. Our strength is in our teamwork – paddling in sync, knowing when to push and when to hold back,” he said.
Halim’s story is one of endurance, passion, and resilience – a shining example of the spirit behind Team Landas.
His advice to younger paddlers is simple: “Never stop training, stay dedicated, and love what you do.”
As the Sarawak Regatta 2025 unfolds, Halim and Team Jetski, proudly carrying the Landas banner, continue to inspire with their grit, heart, and unyielding spirit, proving that age is just a number when passion leads the way.
